According to Verizon Business's sixth annual State of Small Business Survey, conducted by Morning Consult, 600 U.S. businesses are navigating a transformative period of digital adoption across various technological domains. This movement underscores the critical role of technology in shaping the future of SMBs.
Artificial intelligence (AI) stands out as a pivotal tool for SMBs, with 38% of businesses integrating AI into their operations. The survey highlights marketing and social media as key areas of AI application, where 28% of businesses utilize AI for content creation and engagement. Furthermore, 24% employ AI for written communications, and nearly a quarter deploy AI-powered digital assistants to enhance customer service. This widespread adoption of AI illustrates its growing importance in streamlining operations and improving customer interactions.
Social media continues to be a cornerstone of business strategy, with Facebook leading as the most popular platform. An overwhelming 76% of SMBs acknowledge the positive impact of social media on their business, and 58% have established a presence on TikTok. The past year has seen more than three in five decision-makers either launching or increasing investments in content creation, signaling the platform's value in engaging customers and driving growth.
Cybersecurity has emerged as a top priority for SMBs, with 52% recognizing that business growth elevates their risk of cyberattacks. In response, 47% of surveyed businesses have invested in technologies to bolster their digital security, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding digital assets in an increasingly online world.
AI's influence extends to workforce management, where 19% of SMBs are utilizing it for recruitment and talent sourcing. A majority (56%) believe AI can mitigate challenges related to reduced or frozen headcount, and 53% view it as a potential tool for staff retention. Despite these advancements, traditional workforce perspectives remain prevalent, with over two-thirds of decision-makers valuing in-person employee presence for business functionality. This dichotomy reflects a balanced approach to integrating technology while preserving core business values.
