The 2025 Heartland Whiskey Competition, set to take place in Indianapolis on July 15, is poised to bring together craft whiskey distillers from across the United States in a celebration of the unique blend of agriculture and artisan spirits. Sponsored by state corn marketing associations and hosted in partnership with the American Craft Spirits Association, this event underscores the deepening connection between farming and distilling.
With categories such as Best-of-State for each participating state and multiple Farmer-Distiller awards, the competition aims to honor those distilleries that not only produce exceptional spirits but also operate their own farms, growing the corn that forms the backbone of their products. This focus on the agricultural roots of craft whiskey production highlights a significant trend in the industry, with over 30% of entries in the 2023 competition coming from farmer-distillers.
The competition will feature three distinct Farmer-Distiller categories: Top Farmer-Distiller Trophy, Best Farmer-Distilled Bourbon, and Best Farmer-Distilled Beyond Bourbon Whiskey. A panel of industry professionals and expert mixologists will judge the entries across various whiskey categories, with winners announced in early September. Open to all U.S. craft distillers using corn, the event promises a diverse showcase of spirits, from traditional bourbon to innovative whiskey expressions.
Representing more than 75% of U.S. craft distillers, participating state corn marketing associations from Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and several other states ensure a wide-ranging and competitive field. This broad participation not only celebrates the excellence of craft spirits but also shines a light on the vital role of corn producers in fostering innovation within the distilling sector. As Margie A.S. Lehrman, CEO of the American Craft Spirits Association, pointed out, the craft distilling industry is at the forefront of exploring new techniques that enhance corn's contribution to premium spirits, marking an exciting era of growth and creativity.
