A recent study conducted by Aimed Alliance and HR.com's HR Research Institute sheds light on the profound career challenges women encounter due to menopause-related symptoms, underscoring the need for more supportive workplace environments. The research, titled 'Understanding the Health Issues of Women in Midlife,' reveals that only 22% of HR professionals feel their organizations are actively working to reduce the stigma around perimenopause and menopause, pointing to a significant gap in workplace support.
The findings indicate that 81% of respondents acknowledge the impact of menopause symptoms on women's professional lives, with 85% reporting a loss of self-confidence, 68% experiencing presenteeism, and 67% facing reduced engagement at work. Despite these challenges, workplace culture remains largely unsupportive, with only 41% of organizations fostering a positive environment for discussing and addressing these health issues. Alarmingly, 10% of respondents still view discussions about menopause or related health concerns as unprofessional, leading to 61% of women feeling uncomfortable seeking treatment coverage for age-related health issues.
To combat these issues, the study recommends several accommodations to better support women in the workplace. These include allowing time off for medical appointments (88%), ensuring consistent restroom access (86%), and implementing employee assistance programs (80%). Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com, highlights the importance of addressing these midlife health issues, noting that ignoring them not only affects individual well-being but also hampers productivity, engagement, and retention.
