(NASDAQ: ITI) has entered into an exclusive agreement with Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) to introduce SEI's advanced Pedestrian Detection sensor to the U.S. market, a move aimed at tackling the escalating pedestrian fatality rates in the country. Announced on June 11, this partnership seeks to merge SEI's innovative radar technology with Iteris' ClearMobility Platform, enhancing pedestrian safety and mobility management across North America.
The Sumitomo Pedestrian Detection sensor, leveraging 24 GHz millimeter-wave radar technology, has been effective in Japan since 2017, operating efficiently in all weather and lighting conditions. Its unique algorithms allow for tracking pedestrians even when hidden by other vehicles, making it versatile for various road configurations. Iteris intends to integrate this technology into its Vantage PedSafe solution, which is tailored to safeguard vulnerable road users by monitoring pedestrian movements and optimizing traffic signals.
This initiative is timely, as the U.S. witnessed 7,508 pedestrian deaths in 2022, the highest in four decades, with 76% occurring in dark conditions and fatalities nearly doubling in lower-income areas. The collaboration focuses on enhancing transportation equity in underserved communities, where pedestrian safety is a pressing concern.
By incorporating SEI's sensor technology, Iteris aims to bolster its capability to monitor and optimize mobility infrastructure, potentially saving thousands of lives annually, especially in disadvantaged areas.
