The U.S. Department of Defense has allocated an $18.4 million grant to Ucore Rare Metals Inc. to fast-track the development of its RapidSX(TM) rare-earth separation technology at the Louisiana Strategic Metals Complex (SMC). This funding is a pivotal effort to reshore the production of rare-earth elements, essential for national defense and high-tech industries, amidst China's control over 80% of the global rare-earth refining market.
With an additional $15 million incentive from Louisiana, the SMC project aims to produce 2,000 tonnes of rare-earth oxides annually by late 2024, scaling up to 7,500 tonnes by 2027. RapidSX(TM) stands out for its efficiency, significantly reducing the time and space required for producing heavy rare-earth elements compared to conventional methods. This technological leap not only poses a challenge to China's market dominance but also bolsters the resilience of the U.S. supply chain.
Strategically situated at England Airpark near Gulf Coast ports, the SMC is set to transform the geopolitical landscape by strengthening critical defense supply chains. It will play a key role in manufacturing components for F35 engines and precision-guided weapons, among other defense applications. Beyond its strategic importance, the project is anticipated to bring substantial economic growth to central Louisiana, creating 100 direct jobs and approximately 300 indirect positions.
