PG&E Corporation and Solar Electric Supply Inc. have achieved a milestone with the operational launch of a MAPPS® hybrid solar PV power system at the Pittsburg, California landfill biomethane project. Since its initial delivery in August 2023, the system has demonstrated flawless performance, underscoring the potential of hybrid renewable energy solutions in sustainable infrastructure projects.
This collaboration between PG&E and Solar Electric Supply introduces a renewable primary critical power source for monitoring and control equipment at the Biomethane Project. The system's reliability is pivotal for the landfill-gas-to-energy initiative developed by Ameresco, Inc., in partnership with PG&E and the City of Pittsburg. By addressing landfill gas emissions, the project contributes to reducing local smog and greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with broader environmental sustainability goals.
Garrett Gettleman, CEO of Solar Electric Supply, highlighted the project's innovative approach to integrating multiple renewable energy sources. The system not only captures escaped gas through extraction wells but also converts it into usable heat and electricity, benefiting both the facility and the surrounding community. PG&E's role in purchasing the gas wholesale further emphasizes the project's economic and environmental viability.
The MAPPS solar system's design and seamless installation have been commended by Glenn Rustia, a PG&E engineer, for ensuring reliable power supply to Ameresco. The system's components, including a 6.4 kW solar array and custom battery enclosures, showcase the technical sophistication and adaptability of renewable energy technologies to specific project needs.
This initiative exemplifies the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in advancing energy sustainability. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies and integrated solutions, PG&E and Solar Electric Supply are setting a benchmark for future renewable energy projects. The Pittsburg biomethane project not only mitigates climate change impacts but also pioneers a model for sustainable energy generation from waste management facilities nationwide.
The success of the hybrid solar system at the Pittsburg landfill illustrates the practical application of renewable energy innovations in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering community resilience. It serves as a compelling example of how collaborative efforts and technological advancements can pave the way for a sustainable energy future.
