Verizon Wireless has embarked on a significant initiative to bolster its network resilience and environmental sustainability by contracting Solar Electric Supply, Inc. for the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays at 150 cellular sites across California and Hawaii. This initiative is a cornerstone of Verizon's On-Site Green Energy Generation program, designed to diminish dependency on grid power and enhance service continuity during power disruptions.
The integration of solar power systems into the existing power infrastructure at these cell sites is poised to directly power the DC bus in battery backup systems. This strategic move not only prolongs backup power duration but also substantially reduces reliance on the electrical grid, thereby fortifying the operational resilience of these sites.
A notable challenge addressed in this project was the shading effects from cell towers and telecom infrastructure. The collaboration between Verizon and Solar Electric Supply led to the selection of the REC 410AA Pure R solar module, renowned for its four quadrants of shading protection. This feature ensures superior energy production under less-than-ideal conditions, marking a significant advancement over conventional solar panels.
Roger Maiorano, Verizon's solar project lead, commended the partnership with Solar Electric Supply for their pivotal role in selecting optimal solar modules and facilitating connections with local contractors for system construction. This project is a testament to Verizon's commitment to achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030, with over 37.6 megawatts of on-site renewable energy projects already operational. The initiative is projected to offset 22,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, mirroring the environmental impact of powering 8,500 homes or neutralizing emissions from nearly 5,000 vehicles.
Beyond environmental benefits, this solar power investment enhances network resiliency, a critical factor in maintaining Verizon's status as the provider of the nation's most reliable network, especially during extreme weather or disasters. Financially, Verizon anticipates a favorable return on investment, buoyed by decreasing renewable energy costs and the Federal Investment Tax Credit benefits.
