Comcast has revealed plans to significantly expand its fiber broadband network in Northern California, specifically targeting underserved areas in Marin and Sutter counties. This initiative, expected to be completed by mid-2026, will extend high-speed internet access to over 150 locations in Marin County and more than 450 in Sutter County. The expansion is supported by a $14 million Federal Funding Account (FFA) Grant from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and private investments from Comcast, underscoring a concerted effort to mitigate the digital divide in California.
David Tashjian, Regional Senior Vice President of Comcast California, highlighted the transformative potential of reliable, high-speed internet for residents and businesses in these communities. The expansion is part of Comcast's broader Project UP, a $1 billion commitment to enhance internet connectivity and digital skills nationwide. In California, Comcast has already invested over $130 million in digital equity initiatives, including the establishment of WiFi-connected Lift Zones and support for internet adoption programs.
Local officials, including Mat Conant of the Sutter County Board of Supervisors and Eric Lucan of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, have praised the initiative for its potential to uplift families, small businesses, and senior communities by providing them with essential digital tools. Comcast's expansion will introduce a full range of services to residential and business customers, from high-speed internet and mobile solutions to cybersecurity and managed services, catering to the diverse needs of the digital age.
With innovations like Storm-Ready WiFi and plans to roll out symmetrical gigabit speeds, Comcast is not only addressing current connectivity demands but also preparing for future technological advancements. This expansion is a pivotal step towards ensuring that all communities in Northern California have the opportunity to thrive in an increasingly digital world, fostering economic growth, educational advancement, and innovation in the region.
