Competitive Power Ventures' affiliate, CPV Renewable Power, has initiated construction on the CPV Rogue's Wind project, a 114 MW wind energy development in Cambria and Clearfield Counties, Pennsylvania. This project underscores CPV's strategy to repurpose former coal mine lands for renewable energy, aligning with broader efforts towards a low-carbon future. The initiative is part of CPV's growing portfolio in the region, which includes the CPV Maple Hill Solar and the CPV Fairview Energy Center, highlighting the company's diversified approach to energy generation.
Gary Lambert, CEO of CPV, pointed to Pennsylvania's supportive business environment as a key factor in the company's success, with the CPV Fairview Energy Center and CPV Maple Hill Solar project already operational. The CPV Rogue's Wind project will further diversify CPV's energy portfolio, incorporating wind, solar, and traditional energy sources to ensure a reliable and sustainable energy supply.
The project is notable for its focus on brownfield redevelopment and its positive impact on local communities. Sean Finnerty, President of CPV Renewables, emphasized the dual benefits of clean energy production and regional economic development. The partnership with Harrison Street, which acquired a stake in CPV Renewables, is set to fast-track the development of CPV's 4 GW renewable energy pipeline, including the CPV Rogue's Wind project.
Featuring 19 Vestas V-162 wind turbines, the project is expected to generate enough electricity for approximately 32,000 homes, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. Beyond environmental benefits, the project promises economic advantages, including job creation during construction and new revenue streams for local municipalities. It also offers educational opportunities, with the nearby Rock Run Recreation Area providing access to trails leading to the wind turbines.
Tom Kakabar, Chair of the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority, hailed the project as a realization of long-held aspirations for renewable energy development in the area. Scheduled for commercial operation in 2026, CPV Rogue's Wind is a component of CPV's ambitious 10 GW pipeline of renewable and dispatchable generation projects, reflecting the company's commitment to decarbonization and sustainable energy solutions.
This project exemplifies how the transition to renewable energy can revitalize communities historically reliant on fossil fuels, offering a blueprint for sustainable development that balances environmental, economic, and social objectives.
