Comcast has initiated a significant infrastructure project to extend its high-speed internet services to the Key Peninsula in Pierce County, Washington. This $5 million endeavor, a collaboration with Pierce County, leverages $3.75 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA), targeting underserved areas with multi-gigabit broadband speeds for residents and up to 100 Gbps for businesses.
The construction, set to continue until 2025, will cover a vast area from 144th St NW to Hall Rd NW and from 188th Ave NW to Wright Bliss Rd NW. Some residents may benefit from the new services as early as this year. The project underscores the critical role of broadband in modern life, as highlighted by Jen Tetatzin, director of Pierce County Planning and Public Works, who noted its importance for business, education, and entertainment.
Roy Novosel, vice president of engineering at Comcast Washington, emphasized the project's potential to drive economic growth and innovation by connecting more residents to high-speed internet. The expansion includes over 25 miles of network to ensure reliable and fast broadband service, marking a pivotal move towards eliminating the digital divide in rural and semi-rural communities.
