Suter Industries has announced the launch of the HF-TOA288-SDI, a heavy fuel engine for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), at xPonential 2024 in San Diego, CA. This engine, designed for group 3 UAVs, represents a significant advancement in UAV propulsion technology, offering a solution that utilizes jet fuel (Jet-A1, JP5, JP8) to meet the safety and logistics requirements of global customers.
The HF-TOA288-SDI is a twin-cylinder, horizontal opposed, air-cooled, two-cycle engine featuring semi-direct fuel injection and a 1kW starter/generator, with an optional 2kW version. With a displacement of 288cm3, it delivers 16.5kW (22.5HP) at 6500rpm. This engine is the result of a collaboration between CAE GmbH and Suter Industries, combining CAE's 25 years of experience in manned and unmanned 2-stroke engines with Suter's expertise in 2-stroke motorcycle racing design and manufacturing.
Dietrich Kehe, CEO and founder of CAE GmbH, highlighted the engine's reliable combustion across various operational conditions, including hot, cold, and altitude scenarios. Lars Jäger, CSO of Suter Industries, emphasized the company's commitment to expanding its capabilities to meet challenging customer demands for performance and delivery.
The introduction of the HF-TOA288-SDI engine is poised to impact the UAV industry significantly by providing a high-performance, reliable propulsion option that can operate on multiple fuels. This development is particularly relevant for military, surveillance, and commercial applications where efficiency and reliability are paramount. The engine will be showcased at Suter Industries' booth #3650 at xPonential 2024, offering attendees a firsthand look at this innovative technology.
