Production has concluded on the short film Boatlift 9/11, with Oscar-qualifying screenings scheduled for June 2026 in Hollywood ahead of its official premiere on September 11, 2026, marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The film, currently in post-production and expected to be completed by mid-June, recounts the largest maritime evacuation in U.S. history, when an impromptu fleet of civilian vessels rescued over 500,000 people from Lower Manhattan following the collapse of the Twin Towers.
Filmed on location in Wilmington, North Carolina and Manhattan to capture the atmosphere of September 11, 2001, Boatlift 9/11 is inspired by the book Saved at the Seawall by Jessica Dulong. It tells the story of how ferries, tugboats, fishing vessels, and private boats mobilized spontaneously to transport stranded individuals across New York Harbor to safety. Producer Suzanne DeLaurentiis emphasized the importance of recognizing the brave first responders, mariners, and civilians involved in this extraordinary rescue effort.
The production will host free public screenings from June 12 through June 18 at Cinelounge on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, providing audiences with an early look at the film. These screenings are designed to qualify the film for Oscar consideration. The official red-carpet premiere is set for September 11 at the historic Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills. More information about the film can be found at Boatlift911.com.
Beyond commemorating the heroism of that day, Boatlift 9/11 also aims to raise awareness about the long-term health consequences faced by many 9/11 survivors. Thousands have developed serious illnesses, including respiratory conditions, cancers, and kidney disease, linked to prolonged exposure to toxic debris and air contamination after the attacks. In support of this awareness mission, the Mendez National Institute of Transplantation Foundation (MNITF) and its executive director Nicole Mendez have joined the initiative to amplify community engagement around remembrance, resilience, and health advocacy. Details about MNITF's involvement are available at MNITF.org.
The film is produced by Suzanne DeLaurentiis and Nathan Samdahl, directed and produced by Dale Fabrigar, and written by Tricia Aurand. It stars Sofia Helin, Preslea Elliott, and Hank Northrop. As the 25th anniversary approaches, Boatlift 9/11 seeks to honor the courage and compassion displayed during the rescue while drawing attention to the ongoing challenges survivors face, making it a poignant reminder of both historical unity and contemporary health issues.
