LOS ANGELES — Thousands of families gathered on L. Ron Hubbard Way on July 4 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence at the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles' Stars and Stripes Summer Festival. The event featured carnival games, water slides, and a concert headlined by actor Jim Meskimen and actress Amrapali Ambegaokar, drawing both regular attendees and first-time guests from across the city.
The festival, held annually, took on special significance this year as the nation marked its semiquincentennial. According to the Church, the celebration aimed to honor not only America's history but also the values of freedom, unity, and community spirit. Families enjoyed an afternoon of summer activities, with children playing on water slides and parents participating in carnival games. The Church noted that many first-time attendees included newcomers to Los Angeles and visitors from outside California.
As evening fell, the concert began, emceed by Meskimen and Ambegaokar. Meskimen performed a multi-voice rendition of "America the Beautiful," which drew enthusiastic applause. The musical lineup reflected Los Angeles' diversity, with performances ranging from bluegrass by Korey Simeone and Patrick Rieger to soul and gospel by Prez Blackmon, and Latin music by Puerto Rican singer Luis Adrian.
The event took place on L. Ron Hubbard Way, a street named for the founder of Scientology. The Church highlighted that Hubbard's humanitarian work has contributed to efforts against illiteracy, drug abuse, and criminality locally and globally. The street has become a gathering place for community celebrations and cultural festivals.
The Church of Scientology of Los Angeles, located at Sunset Boulevard and L. Ron Hubbard Way, hosts numerous events throughout the year, including Easter, Halloween, Día de los Muertos, and the Holiday Lights Lighting Ceremony. It also organizes cultural fairs and community forums addressing social issues. The Church is featured in the program "Inside a Church of Scientology" on the Scientology Network, launched by ecclesiastical leader David Miscavige in 2018.
