Donald Deibler Urges Communities to Boost Youth Sports Participation

Donald Deibler, business manager of All Stars Ice Cream and Cafe Bakery in Hegins, Pennsylvania, is calling on families, businesses, and community members to increase support for local youth sports programs. Deibler, who also volunteers as a youth sports coach, emphasizes that sports provide more than competition; they offer young people opportunities for physical activity, friendship, teamwork, and community connection.

Deibler's personal experience with sports in his childhood in Donaldson, Pennsylvania, shaped his belief in the importance of teamwork, a value he applies in his business and community roles. He volunteers with Tri-Valley Little League and supports local programs through his businesses. "When you coach kids, you see how important encouragement can be," Deibler said. "You want them to learn how to work together and keep improving."

The call to action comes amid concerning trends in youth sports participation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children aged 6 to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily to support muscle and bone health, cardiovascular fitness, and cognitive functions like attention and memory. However, federal data cited by the Aspen Institute shows that only 54% of U.S. children in that age group participated in team sports or lessons in 2022, down from 58% in 2017, and well below the Healthy People 2030 target of 63%.

These statistics highlight the need for community involvement, Deibler argues. He believes that supporting youth sports does not require large organizations or major programs; small actions can make a difference. Community members can volunteer with recreation leagues, attend games, coach if qualified, help maintain fields, or donate equipment. Deibler also suggests asking existing youth organizations what assistance they actually need.

Deibler's philosophy extends beyond sports. As a business owner, he feels a responsibility to support the community that supports his business. He is involved with Dead Horse Beer & Burritos, owned by his wife, and often helps in the kitchen when needed. "I've always believed that you have to be willing to help where the work is happening," he said. "It doesn't matter what your title is."

The benefits of youth sports extend beyond physical health. Research shows that regular physical activity improves brain health, attention, and academic performance. Deibler encourages parents and caregivers to help children find activities they enjoy, whether organized or informal, like walking, biking, or playing at the playground. "You don't always have to do something huge to make a difference," Deibler said. "Sometimes it is giving your time, helping a team, or just showing kids that people in the community care."

Deibler's call to action is simple: identify a local need and decide how your time, experience, or resources could help. By supporting youth sports, communities can ensure more children have the opportunity to be active, build friendships, and grow, both on and off the field.
