Energy Fuels Inc. (NYSE American: UUUU) (TSX: EFR) has completed its acquisition of Australian Strategic Materials Limited (ASM), a move that significantly strengthens its position in the rare earth supply chain. The acquisition adds ASM's operating Korean Metals Plant in South Korea, which has an existing production capacity of 1,300 tonnes per year of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) alloy and commercial metallization capabilities for neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr). The plant is currently being expanded to 3,600 tonnes of annual NdFeB alloy capacity, with commissioning expected as early as the end of 2026.
The transaction is a key component of Energy Fuels' strategy to build an integrated Western mine-to-magnet supply chain. By adding ASM's capabilities, the company now spans mining, processing, oxides, metals, and alloys. This vertical integration is crucial for reducing reliance on Chinese-dominated rare earth processing and magnet manufacturing. The acquisition also includes the Dubbo project in Australia, which provides a long-life resource of rare earths and other critical minerals, further diversifying Energy Fuels' resource base.
The completion of this acquisition complements Energy Fuels' ongoing production and expansion initiatives for NdPr, terbium, and dysprosium oxides at its White Mesa Mill in Utah. The company is also developing heavy mineral sands projects in Brazil, Australia, and Madagascar, which are expected to feed the growing demand for rare earth elements in various high-tech and defense applications.
Mark Chalmers, President and CEO of Energy Fuels, stated, "We are now a truly integrated mine-to-magnet company, which is a significant milestone in our mission to secure a reliable Western supply chain for rare earth permanent magnets. This acquisition positions us to meet the growing demand from automotive, electronics, and renewable energy sectors, while also supporting national security interests."
The acquisition is expected to have significant implications for the rare earth industry and downstream users. By securing a domestic and allied-nation source of NdFeB alloy and magnets, Energy Fuels aims to provide a stable, transparent, and sustainable alternative to existing supply chains. This move is particularly timely given the increasing global focus on critical minerals and the push by governments to reduce dependencies on adversarial nations.
Energy Fuels also announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Vacuumschmelze (VAC), a leading manufacturer of permanent magnets. This planned acquisition would extend Energy Fuels' capabilities into magnet production, completing the final step of the mine-to-magnet value chain. The combination of ASM's metals and alloys capabilities with VAC's magnet manufacturing would create a fully integrated Western producer of rare earth permanent magnets, a critical component for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and military systems.
The company's shares trade on the NYSE American under the symbol UUUU and on the TSX under the symbol EFR. ASM shares have been delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange following completion of the transaction.
