ESG Symposium 2026: ASEAN Moves from Proposals to Action on Green Transition

BANGKOK, THAILAND – The ESG Symposium 2026, held under the theme "ASEAN in Action: Powering Inclusive Green Transition," marks a pivotal shift from regional dialogue to tangible implementation. Organized by SCG in partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and other stakeholders, the symposium builds on last year's proposals to advance three critical agendas: Energy Transition, Just Transition, and Climate Adaptation. By linking these agendas with Public–Private–People Partnership (4P) collaboration, the event aims to translate policy into business and community action, with lessons from Thailand serving as a model for other ASEAN contexts.

The symposium convenes leaders from government, business, finance, international organizations, and academia to address ASEAN's key challenges: energy security, climate change adaptation, and the creation of an inclusive green economy. According to Mr. Joe Phelan, Executive Director – Asia Pacific at WBCSD, "The sustainability transition is linked to competitiveness, security and investment, which presents both a significant challenge and an important opportunity for ASEAN. The key lies in connecting policy, investment, technology and people through collaboration among government, business, the financial sector and communities." This underscores the symposium's role in fostering a multi-stakeholder approach to sustainable growth.

In Thailand, the business sector is expected to drive collective action, particularly by helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) adapt to the green economy. Dr. Phacharaphot Nuntramas, Krungthai Chief Economist and JSCCIB Economist, emphasized, "Thailand must use the Green Transition as an opportunity to enhance its competitiveness and attract future investment." The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) plans to carry forward the symposium's proposals through its Reinvent Thailand platform, ensuring that large businesses help upgrade SMEs in their supply chains.

The three key agendas reflect both progress and ongoing challenges. On Energy Transition, discussions are moving toward enhancing the readiness of the energy system, including grid flexibility, grid-forming technology, and adjusting the Power Development Plan (PDP) to align with future demand. New technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and biofuels, as well as ASEAN-level cooperation through the ASEAN Power Grid, are also on the table. Dr. Areeporn Asawinpongphan of the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) proposed accelerating resilient infrastructure, increasing solar and bioenergy, and liberalizing the energy market to ensure businesses can access clean energy at competitive costs.

For Just Transition, the focus is on enabling SMEs, workers, and communities to grow together. Building on last year's knowledge tools like NZAP and Go Together, new initiatives such as Funding Connect and SME Green Transition Plus aim to improve access to knowledge, technology, funding, and business opportunities. Mr. Veerachai Monsintorn of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) suggested tailoring support to entrepreneurs' capacity to adapt, starting with a pilot group to create a comprehensive prototype before scaling up.

On Climate Adaptation, the symposium is shifting from post-disaster response to advance preparedness. An AI Simulation Platform for assessing flood risk and infrastructure vulnerability is being developed, with plans to make it publicly accessible and to extend to ASEAN-level risk mapping. Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongsak Suttinon of Chulalongkorn University proposed a One Water Data Center to integrate water data, forecasting, and early warning systems, alongside investment in dual-use infrastructure and a Water Economy to reduce losses and sustain business continuity.

Mr. Thammasak Sethaudom, President and CEO of SCG, highlighted the progress made: "From the proposals and actions of the past year, we now see clear progress across all three agendas... The key challenge today is to take what we have learned and done over many years and scale it up more broadly." He cited the 4P model's success in Saraburi Province as an example to replicate, emphasizing that such collaboration can accelerate change, build a competitive economy, and address climate change effectively.

The ESG Symposium 2026, as reported by Media OutReach Newswire, represents a significant step toward regional action, with implications for businesses, policymakers, and communities across ASEAN. By moving from proposals to implementation, the symposium aims to create a scalable model for inclusive green transition, enhancing competitiveness and resilience in the face of climate challenges.
