Garuda Indonesia Adopts Piece-Based Baggage Policy for Enhanced Clarity and Allowances

Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, effective for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. The new policy replaces the traditional weight-based system and aims to provide passengers with greater clarity and increased baggage allowances.

Under the Piece Concept, checked baggage allowances are determined by the number of pieces and maximum weight per piece, rather than total weight. Depending on route, travel class, and fare category, passengers can check up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each, for a total of up to 64 kilograms. This represents a significant increase compared to previous allowances: on domestic routes, Economy Class allowance rises from 20 kg to 23 kg per piece, while Business and First Class allowances jump from 30 kg and 40 kg, respectively, to 64 kg. On international routes, Economy Class allowance increases from 30 kg to 46 kg (two pieces of 23 kg each), and Business and First Class from 40 kg and 50 kg to 64 kg. Some passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage allowance.

Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that the implementation reflects the company's commitment to delivering a modern, consistent, and transparent travel experience. "Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure," Mills said. He also noted that the Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry and will support service standardisation and more efficient baggage handling, especially when connecting to international flight networks.

Passengers whose tickets are issued before September 1, 2026, will continue to receive the baggage allowance stated on their tickets, even for travel after that date. For tickets issued on or after September 1, the new policy applies to all travel commencing on or after that date. Domestic Economy Class passengers receive one piece of 23 kg; Business and First Class receive two pieces of 32 kg each. International Economy Class passengers receive two pieces of 23 kg each; Business and First Class receive two pieces of 32 kg each.

The policy change is part of Garuda Indonesia's broader service transformation and modernisation efforts. Mills added that the company will continue to review and refine the policy based on passenger feedback to ensure a more convenient and comfortable travel experience. Passengers are encouraged to review the Piece Concept provisions, including applicable baggage allowances by route, travel class, and fare category, on Garuda Indonesia's official website at https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/new-baggage-policy. Further information is available through the Garuda Indonesia Contact Centre and official social media channels.

The introduction of the Piece Concept marks an important milestone in Garuda Indonesia's service transformation, aligning with international standards and providing passengers with greater value and certainty when planning their journeys.
