Kelli Hull, a veteran and Texas native, has opened Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch, a women's contemporary boutique in the Lemon Creek Ranch development serving the Fair Oaks Ranch and Boerne communities. The store addresses a gap in the local market for contemporary designer clothing, as residents previously had to drive 45 minutes to San Antonio for such offerings. Hull, who spent nearly two decades in government contracting in Washington, D.C., moved back to Texas about a year ago and identified the unmet need after hearing similar frustrations from other women.
Monkee's is a North Carolina-based franchise of locally owned boutiques known for carrying big contemporary designer names in small, personal storefronts. Hull first encountered the concept eight years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina, and was impressed by how a boutique of that size could stock well-known brands. The key, she learned, is collective buying power. "Because we're a franchise, the buying power the franchisees have together is significant," Hull said. "Someone like me – my store wasn't even open yet – could walk into a major showroom in New York and buy for the season ahead."
Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch is the eighth Monkee's location in Texas and roughly the 67th nationwide, placing Hull early in a growing national brand. At over 1,200 square feet, the boutique reflects the franchise's signature small footprint and curated approach, offering contemporary designers across a range of price points. Hull emphasizes a personalized shopping experience, aiming to boost customers' confidence. "A lot of women just need someone to say, 'You're beautiful, that looks good on you – but I think we can do even better,'" she said. "When you look good, you feel good, and that projects out."
The veteran-owned business plans to support the military community in the San Antonio area, with details forthcoming. For now, the store is open, and customers can follow @monkeesoffairoaks on Instagram for the latest brands and events, with updates also on Facebook and TikTok. The website, monkeesoffairoaks.com, offers store information, with online shopping planned to launch in 2027.
This expansion highlights how franchise models can empower small business owners to compete with larger retailers by offering curated selections and personalized service. For Hill Country residents, the boutique fills a critical void, saving time and providing access to contemporary designers locally. Hull's move from government contracting to retail also underscores a trend of professionals pivoting to entrepreneurship in underserved markets. As Monkee's continues to grow, its community-focused approach may serve as a model for other franchisees seeking to blend national brand recognition with local touch.
