National bestselling author William Elliott Hazelgrove has finished the manuscript for The Camp Mystic Flood: A Story of Tragedy and Heroism, the first book-length narrative history of the catastrophic July 4, 2025 flood that swept through the Texas Hill Country, claiming 146 lives, including 27 girls and counselors from Camp Mystic.
Drawing on months of research in Texas, Hazelgrove traveled the length of the Guadalupe River, interviewed survivors, first responders, emergency personnel, meteorologists, local officials, and families whose lives were forever changed by the disaster. His reporting also took him into areas devastated by the flood alongside first responders, providing a firsthand look at one of the deadliest freshwater disasters in modern American history.
“The Guadalupe River appears quiet and almost impossible to imagine as a force capable of such destruction,” Hazelgrove said. “But beneath that calm lies a story of extraordinary courage, heartbreaking loss, and remarkable resilience. My goal was to tell that story through the people who lived it.”
The manuscript examines the events leading up to the flood, the unprecedented rise of the Guadalupe River, the desperate overnight rescues, and the months of recovery that followed. Hazelgrove previously wrote about his research journey in a nationally published opinion essay for The Hill, describing his experience returning to the river with first responders and witnessing the lasting impact the disaster continues to have on communities throughout Kerr County.
