Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Drives 290% Surge in Greek Mythology Reading, Nonprofit Data Shows

When Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey opened on 17 July, the clearest measure of its cultural impact wasn't at the box office. It was in the server logs of a nonprofit encyclopedia. World History Encyclopedia (www.worldhistory.org), the free history reference site read in dozens of languages, today published its traffic figures for the eighteen days after release, compared with the eighteen days before.

The data shows dramatic increases in page views for key mythological topics: Odysseus was up 571%, the Trojan War up 525%, and the Iliad up 289%. Overall, Greek mythology and Trojan War content surged by roughly 290%. Even more striking, the entire site—covering all civilizations and centuries—saw an 8.89% rise in traffic.

“A blockbuster gives someone a reason to type 'Odysseus' into a search bar,” said Jan van der Crabben, Founder and CEO of World History Encyclopedia. “What happens next depends on what they find there. They arrive looking for Odysseus and leave having read about the Epic Cycle, Poseidon, Penelope, Ithaca.”

The biggest single beneficiary was not an article but an illustration: World History Encyclopedia's Map of Odysseus' 10-Year Journey Home, published under a Creative Commons licence years before filming began and reproduced worldwide since release. It remains free for editorial reuse.

“It went everywhere, which is precisely the point of publishing it that way,” said van der Crabben. “A $250 million film made our map famous, and there was no paywall in the way.”

The findings offer rare quantitative evidence that popular culture drives people toward history rather than replacing it. The surge appeared across the site's other language editions, not only in English. “We believe information on the internet should be free, accurate, and written by humans who know the difference between Homer's original and Nolan's interpretation,” said van der Crabben. “Every blockbuster is a test of whether that still exists at scale. This summer, we're glad it does.”

For business and technology leaders, this data underscores the power of cultural events to influence consumer behavior and engagement. The spike in traffic demonstrates how a single entertainment property can redirect massive online attention to educational resources, presenting opportunities for content platforms and marketers to leverage trending topics. It also highlights the value of open-access publishing and Creative Commons licensing in amplifying reach and brand visibility without traditional advertising.

The full analysis, including tables and graphs, is available at World History Foundation's website, providing a detailed breakdown of the traffic shifts.
