Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM), a biopharmaceutical company advancing therapies for neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, was featured on the latest episode of The BioMedWire Podcast. Co-founder and executive co-chair Anthony Durkacz discussed the company’s lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, and its commercial alcohol metabolism product, unbuzzd(TM), highlighting growth opportunities.
Durkacz explained that Lucid-MS is being developed to address mobility loss associated with multiple sclerosis by targeting nerve damage, an area he believes remains unmet by currently available treatments. The drug candidate is a patented new chemical entity shown to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of multiple sclerosis, in preclinical models. Quantum BioPharma is preparing for its upcoming Phase 2 clinical trial for Lucid-MS, which will be the first study to evaluate the drug candidate in multiple sclerosis patients following Phase 1 testing in healthy volunteers.
In addition to its pipeline, Quantum BioPharma has a commercial product, unbuzzd(TM), designed to accelerate blood alcohol metabolism. It is currently available in the U.S. market. The company invented unbuzzd(TM) and spun out its OTC version to Unbuzzd Wellness Inc. (formerly, Celly Nutrition Corp.), led by industry veterans. Quantum retains ownership of 19.84% (as of March 31, 2026) of Unbuzzd at www.unbuzzd.com. The agreement also includes royalty payments of 7% of sales from unbuzzd(TM) until payments to Quantum total $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. Quantum retains 100% of the rights to develop similar products or alternative formulations for pharmaceutical and medical uses.
For business and technology leaders, these developments underscore the potential impact of Quantum BioPharma’s dual strategy: advancing a novel therapy for a major unmet medical need while generating revenue from a commercial product. Success in the Phase 2 trial could position Lucid-MS as a transformative treatment for multiple sclerosis, a disease affecting millions worldwide. Meanwhile, unbuzzd(TM) addresses a consumer health concern, offering a way to accelerate alcohol metabolism. The royalty structure provides a steady income stream that could fund further research and development.
The company’s focus on neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders aligns with growing industry interest in these areas. As the global population ages, conditions like multiple sclerosis and alcohol misuse disorders present significant challenges and market opportunities. Quantum BioPharma’s approach, combining a high-risk/high-reward drug candidate with a commercial product, offers a balanced risk profile for investors and stakeholders.
