The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) marked its 60th anniversary with a community art workshop at the Hong Kong Book Fair, where approximately 100 students from primary and secondary schools in Wan Chai created drawings of Hong Kong landmarks and city scenes. The students' artwork will serve as inspiration for a large-scale piece by local artist Jane Lee, known as Messy Desk, which will be displayed from 2 to 29 October at the eastbound tram stop on O'Brien Road in Wan Chai.
The workshop, held under the theme "Hong Kong Trade · Connecting the World," aimed to engage the community through art and spark students' creativity. HKTDC Chairman Prof Frederick Ma and Executive Director Sophia Chong attended the event, emphasizing the council's commitment to community and youth development. "The Wan Chai Community Art Creation Workshop enables young people to draw a vibrant picture of Hong Kong through art," said Prof Ma. "Every pen stroke vividly reflects their perspective on the city's global role."
The final artwork will incorporate elements such as Hong Kong landmarks, exhibition and conference scenes, and depictions of the shipping and air freight sector, as well as community and business life. It will highlight Hong Kong's "Four Centres and One Hub" positioning under the national 15th Five-Year Plan, underscoring the city's strengths in international finance, shipping, trading, innovation and technology, and as a global hub for high-calibre talent. The piece aims to showcase the vitality of Wan Chai as a major hub for international conventions and business activities.
Participating students deepened their understanding of the HKTDC's role and Hong Kong's trade development through the workshop. In addition to the art creation, the HKTDC facilitated free visits to the Book Fair, the Sports and Leisure Expo, and World of Snacks for the students, allowing them to participate in cultural activities and broaden their horizons.
The HKTDC, a statutory body established in 1966, promotes Hong Kong as a two-way global investment and business hub. With over 50 offices globally, including 13 in the Chinese Mainland, the council organizes international exhibitions, conferences, and business missions to create opportunities for companies, particularly SMEs. The anniversary artwork serves as a public milestone, celebrating six decades of connecting Hong Kong with global markets.
