Mitch Gould, founder and CEO of Nutritional Products International (NPI), has built what he calls the "Evolution of Distribution®" platform, a turnkey system that integrates FDA compliance, global logistics, retail introductions, sales, and marketing for health and wellness brands seeking entry into the U.S. market. The platform, which Gould developed in 2007, is the culmination of a family business legacy that began with his grandfather's Brooklyn factory and Empire State Building showroom and continued through his father Jerry Gould's work in manufacturing and distribution.
Gould's grandfather owned a factory in Brooklyn and maintained a showroom in the Empire State Building, conducting business at a time when personal relationships and hustle drove commerce. His father, Jerry Gould, expanded the family's involvement in manufacturing and distribution, deepening ties to the retail trade. "I grew up seeing what it meant to build something real," said Gould. "My grandfather owned a factory in Brooklyn and had a showroom in the Empire State Building—that was his world. My father Jerry took that same spirit into manufacturing and distribution. By the time I was in middle school, I already understood that retail wasn't just a business—it was a legacy."
Entering the retail industry in 1986, Gould benefited from a mentorship with R.D. Wells, a seasoned retail veteran who connected him with Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank during the early days of Home Depot's national expansion. This experience provided Gould with a front-row seat to the transformation of big-box retail. "Between my father, my grandfather, and R.D. Wells, I couldn't ask for better mentors," said Gould. "I was at the right time, at the right place—and I listened."
Over his career, Gould represented major consumer brands including Igloo, Rubbermaid, Sunbeam, and Miracle-Gro, as well as celebrity lines such as Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt Energy Drink, Hulk Hogan's Hogan Nutrition, and Chuck Liddell's Iceman RX. He secured placements at Walmart, Costco, GNC, CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, and Home Depot. Notably, Gould worked with Amazon during its early days when it was primarily an online bookstore, helping to build the sports nutrition and health products category from concept to more than $100 million in sales. That experience inspired the Evolution of Distribution® platform.
Today, NPI is a U.S.-based retail consulting and distribution firm that helps domestic and international brands navigate the complexities of the U.S. market. The company's proprietary platform compresses what once took 18 to 24 months into a streamlined market entry. Gould's story is chronicled in his memoir, The Blonde, the Ferrari, and the Kwan: The Quintessential American Success Story, available on Amazon.
The implications for business leaders are significant: the Evolution of Distribution® platform offers a model for efficiently scaling products across tens of thousands of retail doors, reducing time and complexity in market entry. For the health and wellness industry, this means faster access to American consumers through major retailers like Walmart, GNC, and Amazon. The platform's integration of regulatory compliance, logistics, and sales under one roof could reshape how international brands approach U.S. expansion, potentially lowering barriers for new entrants and accelerating competition in the supplement and sports nutrition categories.
