Total Wireless, a prepaid wireless provider under the Verizon Value portfolio, announced an expanded partnership with Western Union to offer a suite of financial services at its retail locations nationwide. Starting in select stores and rolling out through the end of 2026, participating Total Wireless stores will provide money transfers, bill pay, and money order services to all customers at standard Western Union rates.
The expansion builds on Total Wireless's June launch as the first U.S. wireless carrier to include monthly money transfers at no extra cost for eligible customers on specific plans. Customers on MAX 5G BYO, MAX 5G, and ALL ACCESS plans continue to receive one fee-free Western Union money transfer per month, redeemable online, via the Western Union app, or at participating Total Wireless stores.
“Our stores are gathering places in the communities we serve,” said David Kim, President of Verizon Value. “By adding Western Union to the retail experience, we’re expanding access to everyday financial services for everyone. Whether customers need to send money, pay bills, or purchase money orders, they can now do it at Total Wireless, right alongside getting the reliable 5G connectivity they count on. That’s what it means to put community first.”
This move positions Total Wireless as more than a wireless carrier, integrating essential financial services into its community-centric retail model. With 2,000 exclusive stores across the country, the partnership aims to meet customers where they already shop, enhancing convenience and accessibility.
“Millions of customers rely on Western Union to move money across borders with speed and confidence,” said Jesse Mory, Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Western Union. “By bringing our services to Total Wireless stores, we’re meeting more customers where they already shop and expanding access to reliable, convenient financial services. This partnership strengthens our presence in communities where our customers live and work.”
Western Union's global network supports transfers to more than 200 countries and territories, with over 360,000 payout locations worldwide. This partnership allows Total Wireless customers and the general public to leverage this extensive network directly from their local wireless store.
For eligible Total Wireless customers, the monthly fee-free transfer benefit applies to the Western Union transfer fee only; exchange rates and applicable taxes/surcharges still apply. The service is available to all customers, but the fee-free benefit is exclusive to qualifying plans. More details can be found at Total Wireless Western Union page.
The expanded partnership has significant implications for the prepaid wireless industry, as it blurs the line between telecommunications and financial services. By offering money transfers and bill pay in-store, Total Wireless is tapping into the underbanked and unbanked populations that often rely on prepaid services. This could drive customer loyalty and attract new users seeking convenient, one-stop solutions for connectivity and financial transactions.
For business leaders, this development highlights a growing trend of cross-industry partnerships that leverage existing retail footprints to deliver added value. It also underscores the importance of community-focused strategies in building brand affinity. As more carriers and retailers explore similar collaborations, the competitive landscape may shift toward holistic service offerings that address broader customer needs.
Total Wireless, covered by the Verizon 5G network, is known for its no-contract plans with unlimited data and access to Verizon's 5G Ultra-Wideband. The brand's partnership with Western Union is part of its commitment to providing meaningful value beyond connectivity, a strategy that could reshape consumer expectations in the prepaid market.
