As summer begins, Marine Toys for Tots is highlighting the importance of outdoor play for underserved children through its Give and Go: Outdoor Adventures Start with You initiative. In support of National Fishing Week (June 6-14), the organization partnered with local coordinator Gina Capate to host a hands-on fishing event in Maple Shade, New Jersey, providing 24 foster children with an opportunity to connect with nature and build lasting memories.
The event, affectionately called “Cops and Boppers,” brought together volunteers, local leaders, and law enforcement officers who personally mentored the children. Participants learned fishing skills while practicing patience, teamwork, and resilience. Each child left with a fishing pole and a bag of their own, but more importantly, with a sense of belonging and community support.
“This fishing event was about more than spending time on the water—it was about creating moments where children feel supported, encouraged, and included,” said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity to spark confidence that can last a lifetime.”
The Give and Go initiative aims to address the lack of access to safe outdoor play, educational toys, and enriching books for millions of underserved children. According to Laster, outdoor experiences help children discover confidence, patience, and a sense of possibility. Donations to the program are transformed into fishing poles, soccer balls, books, and games that encourage creativity and problem-solving.
“Outdoor experiences help children discover confidence, patience, and a sense of possibility that stays with them long after the day ends. Every child deserves the chance to step outside, try something new, and realize what they are capable of,” Laster added.
The event in Maple Shade exemplifies how community investment can create meaningful change. For leaders in business and technology, this initiative underscores the value of corporate social responsibility and the impact of fostering early childhood development through play. Companies looking to enhance their community engagement strategies can learn from Toys for Tots' approach of creating tangible, positive experiences for vulnerable populations.
