Veteran's New Book Offers Seven Biblical Keys to Lasting Freedom from Addiction

In a powerful testament to personal transformation, U.S. Army veteran Matthew Linehan has released his debut Christian nonfiction book, 'Free Indeed: The Seven Keys to Unlock Your Freedom.' The book, published by Lucid Books, outlines seven biblical principles that Linehan credits with delivering him from nearly three decades of drug and alcohol addiction.

Linehan's journey into addiction began after his father died by suicide when he was young. The resulting grief and pain led him into decades of spiritual darkness and brokenness. It wasn't until January 2015 that he experienced what he describes as a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ, which set him on a path to lasting freedom.

'After nearly 30 years of addiction, I encountered Jesus Christ and was completely set free,' Linehan said. 'I wrote this book because I want people to know that no matter how long they have struggled, freedom is still possible. There is hope, and there is a way forward.'

Free Indeed is designed for individuals battling addiction, shame, fear, and destructive patterns, as well as for families, ministry leaders, and caregivers supporting them. The book weaves together personal testimony, practical discipleship, and Scripture-based teaching to offer a roadmap out of bondage.

Linehan began developing the material while teaching the Free Indeed curriculum with his wife, Emily, at a large church in Houston, Texas. Seeing the tangible impact on people's lives, he combined the curriculum with his own story of redemption. 'I believe this book is different because I lived it, walked it out, and came through the other side to talk about it,' he said. 'These principles are not theories to me. They are biblical truths that transformed my life and became the foundation of the message God has called me to share.'

Writing the book was not without challenges. Encouraged by friends and family for years, Linehan began the project in earnest around 2020. He had to navigate the difficulties of staying focused while living with ADHD, but his mission remained clear: to offer hope.

'If readers take away only one thing from this book, I want it to be hope,' Linehan said. 'Jesus offers abundant new life to everyone who is willing to surrender. Freedom is not reserved for a select few, and no one is too broken, too ashamed, or too far gone to experience the transforming power of God's grace.'

Beyond his writing, Linehan co-founded Men in Christ Global Ministries, an organization dedicated to helping men grow spiritually and become the leaders they are called to be. He is a 2018 graduate of the Lakewood Church Pastoral Care Internship and has served as a men's ministry director in the Katy, Texas, area. He now resides in Taipei, Taiwan, with his wife and daughter, while continuing his ministry internationally and traveling regularly to Houston.
