VOCIC has introduced the U32 Ultra Lightweight Manual Wheelchair, a foldable, self-propelled mobility aid designed to ease the daily challenges faced by seniors, caregivers, and families. The wheelchair, which weighs just 35 lb in total with wheels and leg rests attached, features a 23 lb aluminum frame, making it significantly lighter than traditional manual wheelchairs. This reduction in weight is intended to alleviate the physical burden on caregivers who frequently lift and transport the chair, whether loading it into a car trunk, navigating narrow hallways, or moving it between rooms.
The U32 was developed after recognizing that wheelchairs are not just for medical appointments but are often integrated into daily routines. "The U32 was designed around the real moments families manage every day, from getting through a doorway to transferring beside a bed, loading the chair into a vehicle, or heading out for an appointment."
Traditional manual wheelchairs often present obstacles such as heavy frames, bulky folding sizes, and fixed armrests or footrests that complicate transfers. The U32 addresses these issues with flip-up armrests and swing-in/out footrests, which create a clearer path for moving between the chair and a bed, sofa, or car seat. Height-adjustable armrests and footplates allow users to customize the fit, while a 17.7-inch wide by 17-inch deep seat with a breathable cushion enhances comfort during extended use.
Caregiver handling has been a key focus in the U32's design. The rear push handles offer four height adjustments, ranging from approximately 37 to 40.5 inches, accommodating caregivers of varying statures and reducing the need to bend. A rear stepper tube enables tilting of the wheelchair to navigate small curbs or minor obstacles, and both user-operated hand brakes and caregiver-operated handle brakes provide dual control for enhanced safety.
Safety features include rear reflectors for low-light visibility, a safety belt, an anti-tip device, and a reinforced Double-X Base frame for added stability. These elements are designed to support confident daily use, whether for self-propelled movement or assisted pushing. The U32's narrow frame, with an overall width below 25.6 inches, helps it fit through standard doorways and tight indoor corridors, making it suitable for home use, clinic visits, family outings, and car transfers.
The U32 folds to a compact 12.6 x 26.8 inches, and its quick-release rear wheels can be removed for even more compact storage.
