The City of Elizabeth, New Jersey recently unveiled an honorary street sign dedicated to L. Ron Hubbard, marking the site where the global Dianetics movement began in 1950. The ceremony brought together community leaders, elected officials, and residents to recognize the historical significance of the location at 42 Aberdeen Road, where Hubbard opened the first Dianetics Foundation following the publication of his book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.
Elizabeth Council President Manny Grova, Jr. addressed the gathering, noting the significant impact of L. Ron Hubbard's work despite the cold weather. New Jersey State Senator Joseph Cryan praised the growth of the movement within the community, stating that the dedication represents the understanding that a better world is possible. Rev. Massimo Parrino, President of the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, also delivered remarks during the ceremony.
The historical significance of the location dates to June 1950, when people from across America and beyond began traveling to 42 Aberdeen Road to visit Hubbard's home. This occurred as Dianetics began its unprecedented 28-week run on the New York Times bestseller list. At this location, Hubbard delivered the first public lectures and demonstrations of Dianetics, sharing principles aimed at personal improvement and the betterment of civilization.
The honorary street sign unveiling follows the completion of the restoration of 42 Aberdeen Road in April 2025, just eight months prior to the ceremony. The property was meticulously restored to its 1950 appearance, both inside and out, exactly as it was when L. Ron Hubbard lived and worked there. More information about the restoration and related events is available at https://www.scientology.org/scientology-today/events/Aberdeen-road-grand-opening.html.
The L. Ron Hubbard Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit organization, works to preserve and present the accurate historical record of Hubbard's research into the human mind and spirit. The foundation encourages the application of his discoveries to address social and scientific challenges while uplifting cultures of all backgrounds. This dedication ceremony represents another milestone in recognizing Elizabeth's influence on world history through the Dianetics movement that began there 76 years ago.
