JCB Co., Ltd. and Resona Holdings, Inc. have announced the start of a project to commercialize ultra-wideband payments, initiating what they describe as the world's first full-scale effort for practical application of this technology. The companies plan to demonstrate payment technology and value-added solutions with partner merchants in 2026, followed by small-scale commercial operations in 2027 and full-scale commercialization in 2028.
The project leverages UWB communication technology, which offers accurate device location and high-speed data communication capabilities. This technology is already used for digital keys, indoor navigation, and gateless public transportation systems. In Japan, where smartphones with UWB functions are widely available, the companies see an opportunity to develop payment solutions ahead of other markets. The diversification of cashless payments and value-added solutions in Japan's payment landscape creates favorable conditions for this initiative.
UWB payments promise to transform the purchasing experience by eliminating the need for physical contact with payment terminals or QR code scanning. Customers could complete transactions with smartphones in pockets or bags, while simultaneously communicating information such as dietary restrictions to merchants. The technology's precise location capabilities enable new value-added solutions including improved store navigation, personalized advertising through smart displays, and special services for VIP customers. These applications could address labor shortages through automation while enhancing customer experiences.
The companies are members of the FiRa Consortium, an organization dedicated to developing technical specifications and certifications for UWB technology. Through FiRa Consortium activities, JCB and Resona will work to standardize technologies and experiences for payment applications while conducting technology tests with participating vendors. The project aims to build payment infrastructure that can accept UWB payment solutions from multiple competitors, reducing implementation burdens for merchants.
Previous initiatives include a strategic partnership formed in January 2024 for "Hands-free Payment" projects using UWB communication technology. JCB has developed UWB-enabled apps for iPhones and Apple Watches alongside reference models for store checkout equipment. The companies have been discussing technologies and business models with collaborative partners in preparation for the current commercialization effort.
Value-added solutions enabled by UWB technology could automate communication of customer preferences including food allergy information, receipt preferences, loyalty program details, and assistance needs. For merchants, the technology supports one-to-one marketing capabilities through personalized displays and coupon distribution while enabling special customer service experiences without verbal communication between customers and staff.
The project represents a significant development in payment technology evolution, moving beyond current NFC and QR code systems. By utilizing Japan's advanced smartphone infrastructure and cashless payment ecosystem, JCB and Resona aim to create solutions that address user and merchant challenges while meeting demands for new payment experiences. The phased implementation approach allows for testing and refinement before full-scale commercialization, potentially establishing Japan as a leader in next-generation payment technologies.
