International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to comprehensively modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube River. This facility is the largest hydroelectric plant in Slovakia and a cornerstone of the nation's energy infrastructure, contributing roughly 10% of Slovakia's electricity production. The project aims to renew and upgrade the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW, ensuring long-term reliable and sustainable electricity generation.
The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The modernization will involve the gradual refurbishment of the plant's eight Kaplan turbine-generator units to bring them up to the latest technical standards. The primary goals are to improve efficiency and availability, and to extend the technical service life of key operating equipment by at least 30 years. This is crucial for Slovakia's energy security, as the plant's continued operation is vital for meeting the country's electricity demand and supporting its transition to cleaner energy sources.
The scope of supply includes model tests, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. It also covers the modernization of critical turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. By upgrading these components, the plant will be better equipped to handle modern grid demands, integrate more renewable energy sources, and operate with higher efficiency, reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
The work will be carried out sequentially to maintain availability during the modernization process, minimizing disruptions to ongoing power generation. This phased approach ensures that the plant can continue to supply electricity to the grid while the upgrades are being implemented, which is essential for avoiding power shortages and maintaining grid stability in Slovakia.
