The Avon Theatre – Deborah & Chuck Royce Cinema Arts Center celebrated a historic groundbreaking for its Avon Recreated transformation project on July 23, 2026, marking the start of a $30 million reconstruction and expansion that will preserve the venue's historic character while introducing cutting-edge technology and expanded community facilities. The project, expected to be substantially complete by September 2027 with a grand reopening in late October 2027, will transform the 87-year-old theater into one of the Northeast's most advanced independent cinema and arts centers.
Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons joined community leaders, donors, and project partners for the ceremonial groundbreaking, which represents the culmination of years of fundraising and planning. The redeveloped campus will feature a fully restored historic theatre alongside three state-of-the-art screening venues, including a new third theatre dedicated to education and community programming. A dedicated Education Center and classroom will support student programs and lifelong learning, while a new Café and Wine Bar will provide a welcoming gathering space for patrons.
The technical upgrades are among the most significant for any independent cinema in the region. The main theatre will feature immersive Dolby Atmos® sound, and all screening venues will be equipped with cutting-edge 4K HDR BARCO Laser Projection Systems. Premium stadium-style seating with luxury theatre seating designed for exceptional comfort and sightlines will replace the current seating configuration. Comprehensive ADA accessibility improvements, including enhanced entrances, an elevator, accessible seating, restrooms, and patron amenities, will ensure the venue is welcoming to all visitors.

Executive Director Peter H. Gistelinck emphasized the project's community impact: "Avon Recreated is much more than a building project; it is the realization of a bold vision to create an extraordinary destination where film, education, culture, and community intersect." The expanded lobby and hospitality spaces are designed to encourage community engagement before and after every film, strengthening the theater's role as a cultural hub in downtown Stamford.
The reconstruction will significantly expand the Avon's capacity to present independent, international, documentary, classic, and educational films, solidifying its position as Fairfield County's premier nonprofit cinema arts organization. The project has been made possible through collaboration among private philanthropists, foundations, public agencies, corporate partners, and hundreds of community supporters.
During construction, the Avon Theatre will continue its mission through the Avon on Tour initiative, which brings films, discussions, and educational programs to venues across Fairfield County, including the Ferguson Library, The Bruce Museum, Darien Library, Mill River Park, and Stamford Town Center.
