FleetCollect, a trucking compliance software platform for owner-operators and small fleets, has announced the launch of a nationwide AI connector that allows users to interact with their fleet data through AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT. The connector, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for securely linking AI to external data, lets truckers ask plain-language questions about their IFTA fuel tax, DOT compliance, and carrier information.
The new tool addresses a common pain point for small carriers: although critical operational data is often stored in their records, extracting it requires navigating multiple screens and reports. With the FleetCollect connector, operators can simply ask questions such as "What were my IFTA miles by state for the last quarter?" or "Which of my drivers have documents expiring in the next 30 days?" and receive direct answers from their own data. This hands-free approach is designed to save time and reduce the administrative burden on drivers who "didn't get into trucking to click through dashboards," as FleetCollect founder Herman Armstrong put it.
Beyond a carrier's own records, the connector includes a live FMCSA carrier vetting feature. Users can check any motor carrier by USDOT or MC number using real-time Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data, returning operating authority, insurance, and safety information. This capability is particularly valuable for brokers and dispatchers who need to verify partners quickly without leaving their chat interface.
Security and privacy are central to the connector's design. All 14 tools in the connector are read-only, meaning the AI can retrieve and summarize information but cannot alter or delete any data. Driver personally identifiable information, such as emails, phone numbers, and license numbers, is filtered out and never returned. Each request is scoped to the authenticated account, so users only see their own data. The connector uses OAuth 2.1 with Dynamic Client Registration and PKCE, ensuring modern authentication standards and giving users control to revoke access at any time.
The availability of this connector could have significant implications for the trucking industry, which is often slow to adopt new technology. By integrating with popular AI assistants, FleetCollect is making advanced data retrieval accessible to a demographic that typically lacks dedicated IT support. This could level the playing field for small fleets, allowing them to compete more effectively with larger carriers by improving compliance accuracy and operational efficiency.
