Diplomats, educators, judges, legislators, law enforcement leaders, Nobel Peace Prize representatives, artists, and youth delegates from 82 nations gathered at United Nations Headquarters in New York on July 30–31 for the 2026 International Human Rights Summit. Hosted by Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) and United for Human Rights, the event celebrated the 25th anniversary of YHRI under the theme "Education for Peace: A 25-Year Legacy," while launching a renewed global commitment to expand human rights education worldwide.
Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, President of YHRI and United for Human Rights, opened the summit by urging participants to transform inspiration into action. "Youth for Human Rights was founded on a simple but powerful belief: when young people understand their human rights, they become champions for the rights of others," she said. Over 550 participants were officially welcomed by H.E. Ambassador Dionísio de Costa Babo Soares, Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the United Nations, which served as principal sponsor. Other sponsoring nations included Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Denmark, the Republic of Moldova, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, with participation from Mexico and Namibia.
The summit featured international leaders demonstrating how human rights education is transforming societies. Speakers included Dr. Bertrand Ramcharan, former Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Ambassador Salah S. Hammad of the African Union; Hon. Dr. José Antonio Michilini, Federal Judge in Buenos Aires; Rafael Freyre Martínez, former Undersecretary in Mexico's Ministry of Education; and Congresswoman Brissa Ireri Arroyo Martínez of Michoacán, Mexico. Nobel Peace Prize legacies were also represented, including Dr. Ira Helfand, Dr. Ash Pachauri, Dr. Seán P. Duffy, and Tebogo Joy Ngoma, granddaughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The summit centered on three international panel dialogues. "Human Rights Education: A Legacy of Change" honored volunteers with over ten years of service. "Human Rights Education: Leadership and the Way Forward" brought together professors, NGO leaders, and law enforcement professionals. "Human Rights Education: Empowering the Next Generation" showcased youth delegates from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Four individuals were honored for their contributions: Trish Duggan (USA), Professor Ornella Castellano (Italy), H.E. Ambassador Ireneo Namboka, and Dr. Vineet Kapoor (India).
The arts played a significant role, with award-winning Mexican actress Fiona Palomo participating as a panelist and Indian actress Sheena Chohan delivering a video message. Congratulatory messages came from governments, universities, and organizations worldwide, including Mexico's National Sports Commission (CONADE). Support from the Church of Scientology enables YHRI to provide free educational materials globally. Beth Akiyama, Executive Director of the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office, quoted L. Ron Hubbard: "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream."
As delegates departed, they carried renewed determination to expand human rights education in their schools, communities, and nations. YHRI now invites educators, governments, universities, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations to join the next chapter of this global movement. After 25 years of educating millions, the mission is more urgent than ever. The next 25 years begin today—and they begin with human rights education.
