The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will bring its flagship promotional campaign, Think Business, Think Hong Kong (TBTHK), to Kuala Lumpur on August 11, offering Malaysian businesses a gateway to regional and global growth. The full-day symposium at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur will gather business leaders, investors, innovators, professional service providers, and policymakers from both markets to exchange insights, explore investment opportunities, and forge cross-border partnerships.
Targeting Malaysian companies with ambitions beyond the domestic market, the event aligns with Malaysia's New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which focuses on accelerating industrial transformation, advancing sustainability, and strengthening connectivity with global value chains. TBTHK will illustrate how Hong Kong can support these priorities by providing access to an established ecosystem of global businesses, investors, financial institutions, and professional services across ASEAN, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), and the wider China market.
“Malaysia and Hong Kong share a long-standing and mutually beneficial economic relationship built on strong trade, investment and growing business connectivity,” said Leung Kwan Ho, HKTDC’s Regional Director of South East Asia & South Asia, at a press briefing. “As Malaysia strengthens its position as a regional hub for business, manufacturing and innovation, Hong Kong can serve as a superconnector and super value-adder, enabling Malaysian companies to realise their ambitions beyond the domestic market.”
Hong Kong is home to nearly 10,000 Chinese Mainland and overseas companies with regional operations, making it Asia's leading international financial and business centre. For Malaysian firms, the city offers a gateway to market entry, cross-border investment, and international expansion through its networks of global businesses, investors, and professional service providers.
The symposium will feature discussions on RMB internationalisation, sustainability and green innovations, Hong Kong's role as an international financial and business centre, and healthcare solutions and innovations. Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and YB Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia, will be the guests of honour at the opening ceremony.
In addition to the symposium, some 30 Hong Kong service providers and start-ups will showcase their products and solutions in the Business Support Zone and InnoVenture Salon, creating collaboration opportunities for Malaysian participants. One-on-one business consultations and on-site business matching will facilitate deals between Malaysian and Hong Kong companies. A delegation of around 100 government officials, business leaders, innovators, start-ups, and professional service providers from sectors including finance, business, professional services, innovation and technology, environmental services, and media and advertising will explore business opportunities through discussions, networking events, and business matching meetings.
The event also includes the Hong Kong Luncheon, providing additional networking opportunities for both business communities. TBTHK aims to deepen Malaysia-Hong Kong business collaboration while providing Malaysian companies with the connections, expertise, and market access needed to pursue new opportunities across regional and global markets.
Economically, Malaysia and Hong Kong have seen deepening trade and investment ties. In 2025, Malaysia was Hong Kong’s 3rd largest trading partner among ASEAN member states. At the end of 2025, Hong Kong was Malaysia’s 2nd largest investor after Singapore, with cumulative FDI of US$34.8 billion and net FDI flow of US$1.6 billion.
