LION Smart Production GmbH, part of LION E-Mobility Group, is accelerating the expansion of its stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) business by adding two internationally experienced executives. Winfried Wahl will lead BESS strategy, while Sebastian Bujnoch will focus on business and sales development, particularly in international supplier relationships and customer growth across Europe. The appointments underscore the strategic importance of the BESS segment as a key growth pillar for the company.
Stationary energy storage systems are critical for integrating renewable energy, stabilizing power grids, and enabling future-proof energy supply concepts. By strengthening its team, LION Smart aims to develop high-performance, scalable, and market-oriented storage solutions, contributing to the energy transition.
Winfried Wahl brings over 18 years of experience in photovoltaic systems and stationary energy storage markets. A graduate electrical engineer from RWTH Aachen University, he has expertise across the entire value chain, from technology and product positioning to market entry strategies, bankability, and regulatory requirements. In previous roles, he shaped the European market entry of companies such as Hithium and LONGi, building brands and product portfolios. He also contributed to developments like the BNEF Tier 1 listing and reinsurance eligibility through Munich Re. As co-author of the IEA World Energy Outlook Special Report 2024 and a jury member of PV Magazine, he has an extensive network in the international energy industry. Since June 2026, Wahl has been responsible for strategic development of the BESS business at LION Smart in Garching, focusing on refining strategic positioning, developing competitive product and business models, and expanding partnerships.
Sebastian Bujnoch complements the BESS team with extensive international leadership experience in manufacturing, operations, and the battery sector. His career spans strategic and operational roles in complex international markets, with a particular focus on China and Asian manufacturing markets over 16 years. He has deep insights into industrial scaling, supply chain structures, and cross-border collaboration. At LION Smart, Bujnoch is focused on building and scaling the BESS business unit, strengthening relationships with Chinese suppliers, and broadening the customer portfolio in Europe.
“With Winfried Wahl and Sebastian Bujnoch, we are gaining two individuals who combine strategic market insight, international experience, and operational execution capabilities in an ideal way,” said Dr. Joachim Damasky, CEO of LION E-Mobility AG. “Their expertise will play an important role in systematically building our BESS business and positioning LION Smart as a strong partner in the European energy storage market.”
The expansion comes as the BESS market grows dynamically, driven by the need for renewable energy integration and grid stability. LION Smart, already offering a 5 MWh container solution and immersion-cooled battery systems, is well-positioned to scale. The company operates highly automated module assembly lines in Germany, emphasizing safety, quality, and reliability.
For leaders in business and technology, this news highlights the increasing focus on energy storage as a critical enabler of the energy transition. Companies investing in BESS expertise and partnerships can gain competitive advantages in a rapidly evolving market. LION E-Mobility AG is listed on stock exchanges in Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg (ISIN: CH0560888270, WKN: A2QH 97). More information is available at www.lionemobility.com.
