National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture Earns AAM Accreditation, Joining Elite Group of Latino Art Museums

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture (NMPRAC) in Chicago has earned accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the highest national recognition for museums in the United States. The announcement was made by HITN, the leading Spanish-language public media network, which congratulated the museum on this milestone.

With this accreditation, NMPRAC joins an elite group of fewer than 1,100 museums nationwide that meet rigorous standards in governance, collections stewardship, education, financial sustainability, and public service. It is only the fourth museum dedicated to Latino, Chicano, or Latin American art in the country to receive this honor, alongside the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, and Museo de las Américas in Denver.

“This accreditation is a powerful affirmation of the museum’s commitment to preserving Puerto Rico’s rich cultural heritage for future generations,” said Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of HITN and a member of the NMPRAC Board of Directors. “It reflects decades of dedication, vision, and hard work by the museum’s staff and leadership.”

Billy Ocasio, President and CEO of NMPRAC, emphasized the community effort behind the achievement. “We have worked for this moment since our inception 26 years ago, knowing that everything we did would hopefully lead to this historic milestone,” Ocasio said. “This accreditation belongs to the generations of community members who believed Puerto Rican stories deserved a permanent national home.”

The AAM accreditation program is considered the museum field’s highest standard of excellence. Less than 1,100 museums across the U.S. hold this distinction, which requires a rigorous peer review process. For NMPRAC, this mark positions it as a premier institution for preserving and promoting Puerto Rican arts and culture outside the island.

The accreditation carries significant implications for the museum’s growth and impact. It enhances NMPRAC’s credibility when applying for grants, partnerships, and donations, potentially increasing its ability to expand educational programs and exhibitions. For the broader Hispanic community, the recognition amplifies the visibility of Puerto Rican contributions to American culture and underscores the importance of preserving Latino heritage.

HITN, which reaches more than 35 million homes in the U.S. and Puerto Rico through providers including DIRECTV, Comcast Xfinity, and Verizon FiOS TV, has a longstanding partnership with NMPRAC. Both organizations share a commitment to serving Hispanic communities through educational and cultural initiatives that preserve heritage and elevate Latino voices.

NMPRAC, founded in 2000 and housed in the historic Humboldt Park Stables in Chicago, is the only national museum outside of Puerto Rico dedicated exclusively to interpreting Puerto Rican arts and culture. This accreditation marks a pivotal moment not only for the museum but also for the broader effort to recognize Hispanic contributions to the cultural fabric of the United States.
