Jo Ann Tilton, a widow, grief-support leader, and Insurance Coordinator for Katy Independent School District, has released a new book, Today, I Bought Bananas, through Clay Bridges Press. The book addresses the often-overlooked practical and emotional realities of widowhood, drawing from Tilton's personal experience after the sudden death of her husband, a fallen firefighter.
Tilton's journey began with an unexpected loss that left her searching for guidance. "When I became a widow, I went looking for a 'how-to' book," Tilton said. "All I found were grief books written by very educated authors who had a lot of head knowledge, but no heart knowledge. You only gain heart knowledge by walking the path." That search inspired her to write the book she wished she had found—one that speaks candidly about the loneliness, uncertainty, and ordinary moments that take on new meaning after a spouse's death. Even routine tasks like buying groceries can highlight how dramatically life has changed, a theme reflected in the book's title.
The book is not only for widows but also for their relatives, friends, church leaders, and community members who want to better understand and support them. "This book is about real happenings from a real widow who has lived the experience," Tilton said. "I hope widows will know they are not alone in their feelings, and I hope others will understand the widows in their lives better."
Tilton's professional role has given her a unique perspective. As Insurance Coordinator for Katy Independent School District, she has supported and counseled hundreds of widows while processing life insurance claims after their spouses' deaths. She is also the founder and leader of 'The Journey Girls', a widow-support group of approximately 40 women who meet regularly for friendship, encouragement, faith, and community. Through this group, Tilton helps women face the challenges of widowhood without walking alone.
Her Christian faith is central to her life and work. Tilton describes her writing journey simply: "God guides me." She seeks to point others toward Christ through her words, compassion, and example.
The release of Today, I Bought Bananas comes at a time when grief and loss remain universal experiences, yet resources specifically addressing the practical aftermath of spousal death are limited. Tilton's book fills a gap by offering both empathy and actionable insight.
