Ningxia goji berries, long revered in Chinese traditional medicine, are undergoing a remarkable transformation into a global superfood and high-value industry. At the 9th Goji Berry Industry Expo in Zhongning County, Ningxia, farmers are harvesting the first berries of 2026, showcasing a sector that has shifted from raw material sales to advanced manufacturing and cultural branding.
Zhongning County, the core producing area for authentic Ningxia goji berries, benefits from over 3,000 hours of annual sunlight and weakly alkaline soil rich in minerals. These conditions produce berries of exceptional quality, hand-picked due to the plant's simultaneous blossoming and fruiting. Pan Tai'an, chairman of Ningxia Wolfberry Goji Industry Co., Ltd., emphasizes the commitment to organic practices: 'We never use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We only apply organic compost to guarantee the pure, natural quality of our goji berries.'
The health benefits of Ningxia goji berries have been documented for centuries, including in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing (Classic of Materia Medica). Today, they are recognized globally as a 'superfood' for their anti-aging properties, high vitamin C, and antioxidants. Western researchers study their immune-enhancing and anti-tumor effects, leading to demand for deep-processed products like goji puree, seed oil, and juice.
To overcome the challenges of perishability and underdeveloped processing, Ningxia Wolfberry developed ambient-temperature preservation technology for goji puree after six years of R&D. This breakthrough allows fresh berries to be cleaned, pulped, sterilized, and canned within two hours of harvest, preserving key nutrients such as goji polysaccharides, betaine, and zeaxanthin. The technology has driven the construction of 50 high-standard production lines across Ningxia, marking a decisive shift to high-value manufacturing. The company has produced over 100,000 tons of goji puree, with sales exceeding 2 billion yuan (about 293 million U.S. dollars).
According to the Goji Industry Development Center of the Ningxia Forestry and Grassland Administration, Ningxia's goji marketing network now covers more than 50 countries and regions, including Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. In 2025, fresh goji berry output reached 200,000 tons, with the full industrial chain output value exceeding 21.3 billion yuan.
Emerging players like Ningxia Qilixiang Goji Co., Ltd. are reshaping consumer perceptions. Founded by three university students with just 700 yuan, Qilixiang now operates about 200 online stores and has annual sales exceeding 1 billion yuan. By developing blended purees like goji-ginseng and red date-goji with eye-catching packaging, the company has transformed traditional wellness into a trendy lifestyle, consistently ranking first in e-commerce sales for goji products.
Quality control is paramount. Ningxia Wolfberry has held organic certifications from North America, the European Union, and Japan for 21 consecutive years, ensuring a 'green pass' to global markets. Its products are exported to 33 countries and regions, becoming a staple for middle-class families from New York to London and a favorite among Hollywood celebrities.
The industry is also diversifying into cultural tourism, with goji art galleries, history museums, and experience centers shifting from selling products to selling scenery and culture. This evolution reflects the broader transformation of China's traditional agriculture and the innovative drive of its real economy, positioning Ningxia goji berries as a symbol of Chinese products and brands on the world stage.
