Opawica Explorations Inc. (TSXV: OPW) (FSE: A2PEAD) (OTCQB: OPWEF) has announced a comprehensive exploration update for its 100%-owned Arrowhead Gold Property, located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt of Quebec. The company has outlined a strategy for approximately 10,000 metres of high-priority drilling, with permits already in place covering 25 drill-pad locations. This next phase aims to systematically test high-priority targets generated from one of the most comprehensive modern geological datasets assembled on the property, while also testing the continuity, extensions, and potential depth of known gold mineralization.
The Arrowhead property sits adjacent to properties held by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited, including the producing LaRonde Complex, which has produced more than eight million ounces of gold since 1988. This proximity to a major producing operation underscores the potential significance of the property. Opawica considers the combination of historical high-grade gold occurrences, extensive historical workings, modern drill-confirmed mineralization, geophysical and seismic datasets, 3D geological modelling, numerous untested targets, existing drill permits, and location within an established producing gold district to represent a compelling exploration opportunity. However, mineralization on adjacent or nearby properties is not necessarily indicative of mineralization at Arrowhead.
Arrowhead is not an early-stage concept; exploration dates back nearly a century, with prospecting beginning around 1920. Historical work included prospecting, trenching, pitting, underground workings, diamond drilling, geological mapping, and sampling of multiple mineralized structures. This work focused primarily on shear zones containing quartz-carbonate veins associated with free gold, with historical gold values of approximately 45.05 g/t Au reported during early exploration. Additional historical chip sampling reported values as high as 90.75 g/t Au over 1.0 metre. These historical results have not necessarily been independently verified by Opawica's Qualified Person and should not be considered indicative of future results.
What differentiates Arrowhead today is the modern geological information layered over this historical system. In 2022, Opawica completed its inaugural modern diamond-drill program, consisting of 4,306 metres of drilling across 14 holes, with 1,590 rock samples submitted for assay. The program tested 13 drill targets and successfully confirmed gold mineralization across the property. Notably, 11 drill holes intersected gold zones grading greater than 1.0 g/t Au along an approximately one-kilometre stratigraphic strike length. Selected results included 18.7 g/t Au over 0.35 metres with 0.72% Cu in hole AR-22-01, 1.58 g/t Au over 0.60 metres in AR-22-02, 1.70 g/t Au over 1.00 metre in AR-22-03, and 1.52 g/t Au over 14.8 metres in AR-22-04. Broader anomalous gold zones extended up to approximately 29.5 metres. Reported intervals represent core lengths, and true widths have not necessarily been determined.
The drilling identified gold mineralization in two principal geological settings: shear zones with quartz-carbonate-tourmaline veins within mafic volcanic rocks, and mineralized felsic tuffs containing quartz-tourmaline veining. Following the 2022 campaign, nine target zones associated with that program remained untested. For Opawica, the 2022 program represented confirmation, and the next phase is designed to test scale.
The planned 10,000-metre drilling program is intended to leverage the extensive dataset, including artificial-intelligence-assisted targeting and 3D geological modelling, to test high-priority targets that could expand the known mineralization. The property's location in an established mining district with nearby infrastructure and a skilled workforce enhances the potential for efficient exploration and future development.
The announcement is significant for the mining industry as it demonstrates the application of modern exploration techniques to a historically known gold system. The use of AI and 3D modelling to generate targets could serve as a model for other exploration companies. For investors and stakeholders, the drilling program represents a potential catalyst for value creation, as positive results could lead to resource definition and ultimately a new mining operation in a prolific gold belt.
Opawica Explorations is a junior Canadian exploration company with a portfolio of precious and base metal properties in the Rouyn-Noranda region of the Abitibi Gold Belt. The company's management has a track record in discovering and developing successful exploration projects. The company's objective is to increase shareholder value through cost-effective exploration, acquiring further properties, and seeking partnerships with industry leaders.
