u-blox, a global leader in positioning and short-range communication technologies, has announced the integration of Switzerland's UTC-traceable timing infrastructure into its GNSS test laboratory in Thalwil. This collaboration with the Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) and SWITCH, the operator of Switzerland's national research and education network, provides u-blox with continuous access to a UTC-traceable reference, ensuring full measurement traceability for its GNSS timing receivers.
The service leverages White Rabbit technology, an Ethernet-based synchronization method originally developed at CERN, to deliver nanosecond-level time synchronization over a fiber-optic network. METAS realizes, maintains, and disseminates UTC(CH), Switzerland's contribution to Coordinated Universal Time, while SWITCH provides the network infrastructure. This integration allows u-blox to validate new hardware and software releases for GNSS timing receivers directly in its laboratory, without the need for repeated visits to external metrology facilities.
“High-performance GNSS timing products depend on rigorous and traceable timing validation throughout the development cycle,” said Samuli Pietilä, Director of Product Line Management, Timing and Infrastructure at u-blox. “This infrastructure allows us to validate and continuously improve GNSS timing receiver performance directly in our own laboratory against a UTC-traceable reference.”
The ability to perform in-house validation against a national standard is a significant advantage for u-blox. It accelerates the development cycle by enabling rapid testing of new hardware and software, and it also supports long-term stability measurements over periods ranging from weeks to months. Such extended testing is crucial for ensuring the reliability of GNSS timing products, which are essential for critical infrastructure applications such as telecommunications networks, power grids, and financial trading systems.
The collaboration underscores the growing importance of precise timing in a world increasingly reliant on synchronized digital systems. GNSS timing receivers are used in a wide array of industries, and their performance directly impacts the accuracy and reliability of these systems. By ensuring that its receivers meet the highest standards of timing accuracy, u-blox is positioning itself to meet the demands of next-generation applications, including 5G networks, autonomous vehicles, and smart grids.
Jacques Morel, Head of the Laboratory Photonics, Time and Frequency at METAS, commented, “We are pleased to support u-blox with our time dissemination service. This collaboration demonstrates how national metrology infrastructure can support advanced industrial applications requiring highly accurate synchronization, timing precision, and traceable validation against UTC references.”
The partnership also highlights the strength of Switzerland's precision technology ecosystem, combining national metrology expertise, optical timing infrastructure, and advanced GNSS technology. For industry observers, this initiative signals a trend where national standards organizations align with private enterprises to foster innovation and maintain competitive advantages in high-tech sectors.
The timing infrastructure is now operational in the u-blox GNSS laboratory and will support ongoing development and validation activities for GNSS timing products. This move is expected to have a ripple effect, encouraging other companies in critical timing-dependent sectors to seek similar collaborations with national metrology institutes, thereby raising the bar for timing accuracy and reliability across the industry.
