Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has reached a critical juncture in its collaboration with Bayer AG, having satisfied the first milestone under their non-dilutive funding agreement. The company announced that Bayer has approved its feasibility work plan and timetable, triggering a USD $1 million payment. This brings the total received from Bayer to USD $1.35 million of the USD $2.35 million committed under the agreement signed in February 2026.
The milestone follows successful laboratory production of 99.8% pure iodine using Voyageur's proprietary Mueller extraction process, sourced from produced water in the Anadarko Basin. This technical validation was essential for Bayer to advance the program. Voyageur's Houston R&D team demonstrated the process works effectively, setting the stage for a transportable pilot plant that is nearly complete and scheduled for field operations this fall.
Bayer's funding supports an ongoing feasibility study led by Fluor Corporation, a global engineering firm, which will assess the project's commercial viability. The study will progress through FEL-2 (Concept Design) and FEL-3 (Basic Design) phases, with the latter expected to take seven to nine months. The remaining USD $1 million milestone payment from Bayer is contingent on successful completion of the FEL-3 study.
This development is significant for the medical imaging industry, as it moves closer to establishing a North American source of high-purity iodine, a critical component in contrast media used for X-rays and CT scans. Currently, the market relies heavily on imports, primarily from Chile, and supply chain disruptions can impact drug manufacturing. Voyageur's project aims to produce 1,000 tonnes of iodine annually, with an initial rollout of 200 tonnes, potentially scaling up over time to meet demand.
