The 2026 World Power Battery Conference in Yibin showcased China's advancements in battery technology, including AI-driven innovations and new safety standards, signaling a transformative impact on the global energy storage and electric vehicle industries.

The 2026 World Power Battery Conference, held in Yibin, Sichuan Province, China, from September 3, has reinforced the nation's leadership in power battery innovation. The event, now in its fifth year, brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss policy trends, cutting-edge technologies, and the future of energy storage. With a focus on cross-border collaboration, the conference underscored China's pivotal role in shaping the global battery landscape.

Data released at the conference revealed remarkable progress in Chinese battery technology. The driving range of lithium-powered batteries has surged from roughly 100 kilometers in the early days to as much as 1,000 kilometers today, while charging times have plummeted from hours to approximately 10 minutes. Battery durability has also improved dramatically, with energy storage batteries now capable of up to 1,500 charge cycles, and costs have fallen by an astonishing 90%. These milestones highlight the rapid pace of innovation and cost reduction, making electric vehicles and energy storage more accessible worldwide.

At the opening ceremony, eight pioneering power battery technologies for 2025–2026 were unveiled. These include ultra-fast charging batteries that can recharge in about 10 minutes, hybrid solid-liquid batteries with a specific energy of 350 Wh/kg, and large-capacity, high-safety energy storage batteries ranging from 300 Ah to 600 Ah. Such breakthroughs are poised to drive further industry innovation, potentially accelerating the transition to clean energy and electrification across sectors.

Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, outlined three major trends shaping the power battery industry. First, he emphasized the critical importance of battery safety across the entire lifecycle. China's mandatory national standard, Electric Vehicles Traction Battery Safety Requirements, took effect on July 1, mandating that batteries must not catch fire or explode, that emitted gases must not harm occupants, and that after 300 fast-charging cycles, batteries must still pass external short-circuit tests without igniting or exploding. This regulation sets a new global benchmark for safety.

Second, Ouyang highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the battery value chain. AI is being applied to intelligent battery design, manufacturing, and management, reshaping the industry's technology, industrial, and value chains. This integration promises to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and accelerate innovation, potentially leading to smarter energy storage solutions.

Third, the trend toward green and low-carbon development across the full lifecycle was underscored. This aligns with global sustainability goals and reflects the industry's commitment to reducing environmental impact from production to disposal.

The conference also showcased the convergence of power batteries with embodied intelligent robots. Wang He, founder and CTO of GALBOT, presented the company's latest humanoid robot, which overcomes workload limits and has been commercially deployed on a large scale at companies like CATL. Wang predicted that leading players in the sector could reach a "ChatGPT moment" for embodied intelligence by 2028, ushering in exponential growth for humanoid robotics. This development would open new horizons for power batteries, as robots require advanced energy storage solutions, further expanding the market.

Spain, this year's Guest Country of Honor, highlighted the growing international collaboration in the sector. Spanish Ambassador to China, Betanzos, noted that Chinese investment in Spain is shifting from trade to long-term industrial projects, bringing production, creating high-quality jobs, and fostering alliances with local companies. This trend exemplifies the global impact of China's battery industry advancements and the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships.

The implications of these developments are vast. Enhanced battery safety standards could set a global precedent, influencing regulations worldwide. AI integration in battery technology could lead to smarter, more efficient energy systems, while advancements in humanoid robots could revolutionize manufacturing and logistics. For industry leaders, these trends signal a need to adapt to rapidly evolving technologies and standards to remain competitive in the global market.
