The 2026 Duisburg China Festival kicked off on Friday afternoon in Duisburg, Germany, with participation from Chinese and German cities, aiming to bolster bilateral ties. The three-day event features cultural booths and interactive zones that showcase traditional Chinese cuisine, culture, and contemporary art. The opening gala on Friday evening was headlined by nearly 40 artists from Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei Province, who presented a dozen programs spanning Peking opera, Hanju opera, Chuju opera, acrobatics, and ethnic song and dance.
This festival serves as a vivid expression of China-Germany exchange, allowing Germans to experience China up close, noted Chang Haitao, acting consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Dusseldorf. The event comes as Duisburg and Wuhan celebrate over four decades of partnership, having become sister cities in 1982—the first such pairing between Germany and China. The relationship has been maintained through close people-to-people and economic exchanges, which have forged a strong bond between the two cities.
Duisburg Mayor Soeren Link was visibly impressed by the Chinese artists' performances, describing the opening gala as unforgettable for its standard, quality, richness, and the many facets it presented. He emphasized that Duisburg values its sister-city relationship with Wuhan and hopes to continue strengthening German-Chinese friendship, as well as exchange and dialogue between the two sides. Markus Teuber, commissioner for China affairs at the Mayor's Office of Duisburg, echoed this sentiment, stating that the performances offered German audiences an excellent window into Chinese culture and expressed hope for deepened cultural exchange in the future.
Yang Jing, deputy director of the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, viewed the city's participation as a significant step in Wuhan culture's global outreach. The Duisburg China Festival, now an annual signature cultural event for the city, injects fresh grassroots momentum into the development of German-Chinese friendship.
